The day was coming to an end, and I was utterly disappointed in it. On my way inside for the night, I stopped in front of the building next to mine. Two of the ugliest, saddest, most poorly constructed, and ill-conceived fountains are prominently displayed as the centerpiece of grand landscaping for that building. Nonetheless, I grabbed my camera, adjusted the settings, and looked through my lens, slowly panning across every inch of these fabulous failures of fountain design. Suddenly, there it was. In the midst of ugly, I found 15 square centimeters of accidental beauty. I smiled. The twisted taste of bitterness and contempt that I held for the day evaporated in an instant, and I reminded myself that moments such as this – when perception can be shifted – are the only moments worthy of being dwelt upon.
